Inspired by the 1999 French film Beau Travail, Wednesday’s iconic dance scene was choreographed by Ortega herself after she and executive producer Tim Burton decided to change the sequence from the scene’s original plan. In earlier drafts of the scene, Wednesday would join a larger flash mob, though both Ortega and Burton would ultimately decide that the move would not be in character for the Addams family’s eldest child. As such, Wednesday would instead dance to The Cramps’ 1981 cover of “Goo Goo Muck,” with Wednesday’s choreography attracting the attention of audiences as she instantly stood out from her classmates and retained her unique personality.

Upon Wednesday season 1’s release, audiences latched onto the scene, with one viewer editing the sequence to a sped-up rendition of Lady Gaga’s 2011 song, “Bloody Mary.” When the edited scene began to circulate on TikTok amongst the fandom and beyond, cosplayers and other dedicated fans of the Netflix series recorded themselves recreating the choreography, with even Madonna and figure skater Kamila Valieva creating their own unique renditions. The trend would then go on to be recognized by Netflix themselves in Wednesday’s season 2 announcement video, as Ortega’s in-character narration acknowledged the viral trend before the video featured the “Bloody Mary” rendition.
